Ray-Ban Meta glasses without Facebook or Instagram: what you need and what you lose
You need a Meta Account to use Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and you can create one with an email address. Here is what linking Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp adds, how to unlink them and what the account stores.

Part of our Ray-Ban Meta guide
You don't need a Facebook or Instagram account to use Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Meta's help center says you need a Meta Account, and that if you don't have one you can set it up with your email address, Instagram or Facebook. Linking Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or Messenger is optional and switches on particular features.
This guide is based on Meta's help center and release notes (read Oct. 26, 2026) and on our guides to Meta's privacy settings, and we haven't tested the sign-up flow.
What the Meta Account needs
Meta's setup article says to open the Meta AI app on your phone and follow the instructions that appear. To create the account with an email address, you provide:
- An email address. You can create only one Meta Account per email address.
- A first name and surname. Meta says to use your real name if you need to recover the account or manage store purchases, but it isn't required.
- A date of birth. You need to be at least 13 years old to create a Meta Account in most regions, and Meta says the date helps it provide age-appropriate experiences.
- A password of at least eight characters that someone else couldn't easily guess.
Ray-Ban's safety guide separately says the glasses are for people 13 and older, as our age guide explains. If you sign up with Facebook or Instagram instead, the new Meta Account connects to the same Accounts Center as that account. Meta says it is gradually updating Accounts Center, so your phone may show either Accounts Center or Meta Account settings.
Each pair of glasses works with one Meta Account at a time. Our setup guide covers pairing and what to do when you change phones.
What linking adds and what you do without it
Meta's calling article has you connect only the services you want, each one separately under Communication in the Meta AI app.
| Feature | What it needs | If you skip it |
|---|---|---|
| Voice calls and messages on WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram | The app connected under Communication | Use your phone's own calls and texts |
| Calls and texts from your phone, by voice | Your iPhone or Android phone connected, with permission to read contacts | Calls and messages only through the apps you did connect |
| Video calls that share your view | WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram | Voice calls only, and our video call guide has the steps |
| Sharing a video to a Story | Instagram or Facebook connected, and a video of 15 seconds or less | Import the video to your phone and post it from there |
| Instagram Instants ("Hey Meta, share an instant") | Not available | |
| Livestreaming | Facebook or Instagram, and Meta lists Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 1) only | Not available, and our livestream guide has the limits |
Connecting your phone has its own terms. Wireless carrier charges may apply, and the app asks for permission to read your contacts. Meta says phone numbers and contact history stay on your devices and aren't shared with Meta servers.
Meta's article doesn't say whether Messenger, WhatsApp or Instagram need a Facebook or Instagram profile of their own, so check each app's sign-in on your phone before you connect it. Music, calendar and fitness services connect on their own screens in the same app, and our apps guide lists them.
How to unlink an app
From the glasses
- In the Meta AI app, tap Glasses in the top right, then tap Device settings. If you have more than one pair, swipe to the one you want first.
- Under Glasses, tap your glasses, then tap Communication.
- Tap the app you want to remove, then tap Disconnect.
From your Meta Account
Meta says you can add or remove accounts from Accounts Center, next to your Facebook and Instagram accounts, at any time. An account you used to sign up can also be removed from the same Accounts Center or Meta Account. The setup article doesn't list the taps. Meta's Help Center has a page on adding or removing accounts from an Accounts Center, which we couldn't load, so follow the steps there.
Meta's article doesn't say what removing the Facebook or Instagram account does to the login of a Meta Account you created through it. If you want a Meta Account that doesn't depend on either, create it with an email address from the start.
Moving the glasses to a different account
Unpair them first: in the Meta AI app, tap Glasses, then Device settings, your glasses, General, Unpair glasses and Unpair. Meta says unpairing doesn't change or erase your settings. If the glasses still won't pair with the new account, factory reset them after you import your photos and videos, because a reset deletes everything stored on them.
What the Meta Account holds
| What | What Meta says | Where to control it |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-up details | Email address, name, date of birth and password | Accounts Center or Meta Account settings |
| Pairing | A pair works with one Meta Account at a time | Unpair in the Meta AI app |
| Voice recordings and transcripts | Stored by default for up to one year, and you can delete them but can't turn storage off | Glasses privacy, then Voice activity log |
| Meta AI requests about what you see | The glasses send a photo to Meta's cloud, and you can review the request, image and answer | Chats in the Meta AI app |
| Cloud media | Copies are deleted after 30 days | Glasses privacy, then the Cloud media toggle |
| Usage data | You choose whether to share additional data | Glasses privacy |
| Phone contacts | Numbers and contact history stay on your devices | Your phone's permissions |
| Location | The app's location permission is needed for navigation and Find device | Your phone's settings |
| Username | The app asks you to create a Meta AI username, which shows if you post to the Discover feed | Meta AI app |
Our privacy settings guide has the taps for each setting. Our guide to what Meta AI glasses send to Meta covers how long Meta keeps the data and what it says about AI training.
