Valve sells the Steam Frame in the US for $1,059 with 256GB of storage or $1,299 with 1TB. It is a standalone VR headset that runs SteamOS on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and plays games from Steam on its own. It also streams PC VR from a gaming PC through a wireless adapter that comes in the box. Valve opened reservations on Sept. 14, 2026 and sold the first batch through a randomized draw, Road to VR reported.

This guide is based on Valve's announcements as relayed by UploadVR, Road to VR and GamingOnLinux, on Meta's published Quest specifications and on our own guides to the rival headsets. We haven't used a Steam Frame. The prices are Valve's launch prices from Sept. 14, 2026.

Valve announced the headset on Nov. 12, 2025, with a target of early 2026, and held back the price and date as component costs rose, according to Road to VR. Valve confirmed to UploadVR that its old Index headset is no longer in production.

Valve sold the first units the way it sold its Steam Machine, through a randomized draw meant to limit resellers. Buyers had to sign up for one model by 10 a.m. PT on Sept. 17. Valve said it would then email each of them to say whether they were on the reservation list or the waitlist, and that the first purchase emails would go out on Sept. 18. GamingOnLinux added that buyers on the list get 72 hours to complete a purchase, and it put the wait for waitlisted buyers at weeks or months. Valve ships directly in the US, Canada, the UK, the EU and Australia. Those reports date from the launch, so check Valve's page for current stock and whether the draw is still in use.

What comes in the box

Each Steam Frame includes the headset, two controllers, the wireless adapter for a PC and a copy of Half-Life: Alyx. There is no power supply, so you need your own charger or Valve's $29 one. Road to VR adds that Valve packs a magnetic spacer for wearing glasses, and that the default setup comes without a top strap, which Valve sells in an accessory kit.

The figures come from UploadVR, which got them from Valve at the November 2025 announcement, and Road to VR's launch coverage matches them on resolution, chip, storage and controller battery life. Road to VR lists the weight slightly differently, at 190 grams for the front unit and 435 grams in total. None of the reports we read gives a pixels-per-degree figure for the Frame. Road to VR called the resolution "essentially the same" as Quest 3's, at 4.7 megapixels per eye against 4.6, and said Quest 3 has somewhat better optics and a brighter display.

How the headset streams PC VR

Steam Frame has no DisplayPort or HDMI input, so everything from a PC arrives over Wi-Fi, UploadVR reported. One radio connects to your home network on the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band. The other creates a 6GHz Wi-Fi 6E link to the USB adapter in the box, and SteamVR on the PC connects to it automatically. That cuts your router out of the path and lets Valve control the whole network stack. Owners with a well-built Wi-Fi setup can skip the adapter, UploadVR said, though Valve suspects they won't. Valve also lists a Multi-Link Streaming mode that combines the adapter and your Wi-Fi network, GamingOnLinux reported.

The second feature is foveated streaming. The headset's eye tracking tells the PC where you are looking, and the video encoder puts more of its bitrate there. Valve told UploadVR that its version has lower latency and more precision than Steam Link on Quest Pro, because Valve controls the whole software stack on the headset.

What runs on the headset by itself

The Steam Frame is a computer, so you can use it without a PC. UploadVR explained how: Linux games run natively and Windows games run through Proton, Valve's compatibility layer. Most Steam games are built for x86 chips and the Frame's chip uses a different design, so Valve integrated FEX, an open-source emulator that translates them. Valve told UploadVR the performance cost is "shockingly small," on the order of a few percent. Android apps, including APKs you download in the browser, run too if they don't need Google Play Services, and Valve now accepts APKs on Steam so developers can port Quest games.

The limit is the chip. UploadVR called it a roughly 10-watt smartphone processor with a fraction of the power of the PCs most SteamVR games were built for. Simple, well-optimized games run well, and demanding ones such as Half-Life: Alyx are better streamed. Valve's launch highlights, as GamingOnLinux listed them, said more than 100 games were already marked Steam Frame Standalone Verified. Road to VR added that flat games play on a virtual screen and that SteamVR games without the Verified badge are a gamble. It also reported on Sept. 14 that Valve had confirmed a native standalone version of Half-Life: Alyx, but not in time for launch. Unlike a Quest, which has a locked bootloader, the Frame can run other operating systems, Road to VR said.

Controllers, tracking and what's missing

The Steam Frame Controllers have a ringless design similar to Meta's Touch Plus controllers, and the headset tracks them through infrared LEDs under the plastic, UploadVR said. Each has 18 LEDs against eight on a Touch Plus controller. Valve put a D-pad on the left controller, A, B, X and Y on the right, and an index bumper and trigger on both, so the pair has every input a regular gamepad has and works for flat games too. The thumbsticks use tunneling magnetoresistance sensors, which UploadVR says should resist drift. Hand straps are extra.

Two things are missing from the standard setup. UploadVR reported that the headset needs a controller and doesn't support hand tracking without one. And the passthrough view from the two front cameras is black and white and low resolution, which Road to VR called a step down from Quest 3's full-color view. The front expansion port carries two camera lanes and one PCI Express lane, so in theory it can take color cameras, depth sensors and more, UploadVR said.

Weight, comfort and glasses

Valve built the headset in two parts. The front unit holds the displays and optics, and a fabric strap carries the speakers and a padded rear battery section that can collapse against the lenses for travel, UploadVR said. Road to VR noted that most of the weight sits in the strap behind your head. Valve will release CAD and electrical specifications so third parties can make their own facial interfaces and straps.

For glasses wearers, Valve's spacer gives your frames room, but Road to VR couldn't say how wide a frame fits. It reported that Zenni Optical inserts will come at some point and that third-party sellers including VR Optician, WidmoVR and VR Rock already advertise prescription lenses for the Frame.

Quest 3's numbers come from Meta's comparison page, with its weight from UploadVR's spec sheet. The others come from our guides to Meta VR Glasses, Galaxy XR and Apple Vision Pro, which use each company's own specifications.

Against Quest 3

The Frame costs about $460 more at 256GB and about $700 more at 1TB. For that it adds eye tracking, a dedicated PC link and access to the entire Steam catalog, and UploadVR estimates its graphics chip is about 25% more powerful on paper. Quest 3 has full-color passthrough at 4 megapixels, hand tracking and a library built for it, and Meta lists its field of view as 110 degrees horizontal and 96 vertical, where Valve says 110 by 110 for the Frame. Our Quest 3 and Quest 3S guide has Meta's current prices.

Against Meta VR Glasses

The 1TB Frame costs about the same as Meta's $1,299.99 glasses, which Meta says go on sale in spring 2027. They aim at different jobs. Meta pitches movies, live sports and a multi-screen desk, with a field of view of about 70 degrees per UploadVR, and Valve pitches Steam games.

Against Galaxy XR and Vision Pro

The Frame costs far less than either and states a slightly wider field of view than Galaxy XR's 109 by 100 degrees, but it lacks their color passthrough and hand tracking. The ecosystem often decides this one: Galaxy XR fits Android and Windows users, and Vision Pro fits people with iPhones and Macs, as our guides explain. Our Android XR explainer covers Google's platform, and our field of view guide explains what the degrees mean. For a ranking across all of these headsets, see our best VR headsets of 2026.

Who the Steam Frame suits

Road to VR's answer is PC VR enthusiasts, heavy Steam users, tinkerers and anyone who wants "a lightweight PC VR/standalone hybrid that can do a lot, but not all." The specs fit that: owners of a Steam library and a gaming PC get a wireless link built for the job, and tinkerers get an open device.

People who want hand tracking or full-color mixed reality are better served on the published specs by a Quest 3, Galaxy XR or Vision Pro, and anyone watching a budget can buy a Quest 3S for $349.99. Standalone performance is the other caution: the chip is a smartphone one, and Valve's list of verified standalone games was a little over 100 at launch.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Steam Frame cost?

In the US, $1,059 for 256GB and $1,299 for 1TB, according to the launch prices Road to VR reported. Both include controllers, the PC wireless adapter and Half-Life: Alyx. A power supply is not included and Valve sells one for $29.

When does the Steam Frame come out?

Valve opened reservations on Sept. 14, 2026 and said it would email the first purchase invitations on Sept. 18, so the first units were due to arrive shortly after. Anyone who doesn't win a place in the draw goes on a waitlist.

Do you need a PC to use the Steam Frame?

No. It runs SteamOS on its own chip and can play Steam games by itself, and Valve's launch highlights say more than 100 are marked Steam Frame Standalone Verified. A gaming PC matters for demanding VR games, which the headset streams over its wireless adapter.

Steam Frame vs Quest 3: which should you buy?

Going by the published specs, Quest 3 costs $599.99 and has full-color passthrough, hand tracking and a large library built for it. Steam Frame costs $1,059 or more and adds eye tracking, a dedicated PC streaming link and the whole Steam catalog. Quest 3 suits people who mostly want Quest games, and Steam Frame suits people who already own Steam games.

Does the Steam Frame have hand tracking or color passthrough?

Not in the box. UploadVR reported at the announcement that the headset needs controllers and doesn't support hand tracking without them, and its passthrough is monochrome. Arcturus Vision sells a $150 add-on with color cameras, according to Road to VR.

Can you wear glasses with the Steam Frame?

Yes, with limits. Valve includes a magnetic spacer that creates room between your glasses and the lenses, Road to VR reported, but it couldn't say how wide a frame fits. Zenni Optical prescription inserts are promised without a date.
