There is no single best VR headset in 2026, and the right one mostly follows the ecosystem you already use. On price and game library, Meta's Quest 3S at $349.99 and Quest 3 at $599.99 lead. Valve's Steam Frame at $1,059 suits PC VR, Samsung's Galaxy XR at $1,799.99 suits Android and Google users, Apple's Vision Pro from $3,699 suits people with iPhones and Macs, and Sony's PlayStation VR2 suits PS5 owners. Meta's VR Glasses, at $1,299.99, don't go on sale until spring 2027.

This guide compares the headsets on each company's published prices and specifications, gathered in our own product guides. We haven't tested any of them, so the picks below follow the specs. Prices are US prices as of Oct. 25, 2026. Component costs pushed prices up this year: Meta raised Quest prices in April, citing memory chips, Apple raised Vision Pro prices in June, and Valve held back Steam Frame's price while its parts costs rose.

The figures come from Meta's Quest comparison page, UploadVR's reporting on Quest 3's weight and Meta VR Glasses, Sony's pages and the company specifications gathered in our guides. Field of view is published unevenly: Meta lists 110 by 96 degrees for Quest 3 and 96 by 90 for Quest 3S, Samsung lists 109 by 100 for Galaxy XR, Valve says "conservatively" 110 by 110 for Steam Frame, UploadVR puts Meta VR Glasses at 70 by 66, and Apple doesn't publish one. Our field of view guide explains how to read those numbers.

Meta Quest 3S and Quest 3: the value picks

Meta raised Quest prices on April 19, 2026, citing memory-chip costs. Quest 3S now costs $349.99 with 128GB or $449.99 with 256GB, and Quest 3 costs $599.99 with 512GB. The two share a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, 8GB of memory, color passthrough, hand tracking and Touch Plus controllers, and they play the same games. Quest 3 adds pancake lenses, 30% more pixels and a wider field of view.

Going by the specs, Quest 3S is the cheapest way into a large VR library, and Quest 3 is the one to pick if you read text, watch video or play long sessions. Both include a soft strap and controllers, and Meta includes a glasses spacer with Quest 3S. Our Quest 3 and Quest 3S guide covers the differences.

Valve Steam Frame: the PC VR and tinkerer's pick

Steam Frame is a standalone SteamOS headset that also streams PC VR through a Wi-Fi 6E adapter in the box, using eye tracking to sharpen the part of the picture you are looking at. It costs $1,059 with 256GB or $1,299 with 1TB, and Valve sold the first batch through a reservation draw. Controllers and a copy of Half-Life: Alyx are included. The trade-offs are black-and-white passthrough and, according to UploadVR, no hand tracking at the announcement. It suits people who own a Steam library and a gaming PC, and our Steam Frame guide has the full details.

Apple Vision Pro: for people who live in Apple's ecosystem

Apple sells one Vision Pro, the M5 model, and raised its price by $200 on June 25, 2026. It runs visionOS 27, which added Siri AI, and you control it with your eyes, hands and voice. Apple includes no controllers. It is the heaviest headset here at 750 to 800 grams plus a 353-gram battery, and its battery lasts up to 2.5 hours. Apple sells it in 13 countries and regions. Our Vision Pro guide covers what visionOS 27 adds and what Apple is reported to be planning next.

Samsung Galaxy XR: Android's headset

Galaxy XR costs $1,799.99 with 256GB and runs Android XR with Gemini built in. Its micro-OLED display has 27 million pixels, the most in this group, and the headset weighs 545 grams plus a 302-gram battery pack that lasts up to two hours. It tracks your eyes and hands and runs apps from Google Play. Controllers and a travel case cost extra, and Samsung says the headset isn't meant for anyone under 13. Google added PC Connect for Windows PCs in December 2025 and said more than 100 apps had been built for XR by April 2026. It suits Android and Windows users, as our Galaxy XR guide explains, and our Android XR explainer covers Google's platform.

PlayStation VR2: for PS5 owners

PS VR2 is the one headset here built around a game console. Sony announced in February 2025 that its recommended US price would drop to $399.99 in March, for the headset, Sense controllers and stereo headphones. Sony lists two OLED displays of 2,000 x 2,040 per eye at up to 120 frames per second, plus eye tracking and headset vibration. It requires a PS5, and a separate PC adapter lets it play Steam VR games. Sony said in February 2025 that an update added low-latency hand tracking for games that support it, and it says the headset isn't for children under 12.

Sony's PS VR2 page says "Available now," but the Sony pages we read on Oct. 25 didn't show a current headset price, so confirm the price and stock at a retailer.

Meta VR Glasses: wait until spring 2027

Meta's VR Glasses are shaped like glasses and weigh about 100 grams, with the computer, battery and storage in a pocket puck on a cable. They cost $1,299.99 and go on sale in spring 2027, without controllers. Meta says they use micro-OLED panels at 37 pixels per degree and play up to three hours of video per charge, and UploadVR reports a field of view of about 70 degrees horizontal, narrower than Quest 3's 110. They run the same operating system and store as Quest. Meta pitches movies, live sports and multi-screen work. Our Meta VR Glasses guide has the specifications.

Other things to check before you buy

If you wear glasses, Meta includes a spacer in the Quest 3S box and Road to VR reports that Valve packs a magnetic one with Steam Frame. Apple says Vision Pro is designed to be used without glasses and sells ZEISS inserts at $99 for readers and $149 for prescriptions, while Samsung sells optical inserts separately for Galaxy XR. Meta's announcement doesn't say whether VR Glasses fit over eyeglasses.

Accessories change the real price. Galaxy XR controllers cost extra, Steam Frame ships without a power supply, and Meta VR Glasses controllers are sold separately. Prices have risen this year and retailers do discount Quest headsets, so check the current price before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best VR headset in 2026?

It depends on what you use it for. On price and game library, Meta's Quest 3S ($349.99) and Quest 3 ($599.99) are the default choices. Steam Frame suits PC VR, Galaxy XR suits Android users, Vision Pro suits Apple users and PlayStation VR2 suits PS5 owners.

Quest 3 vs Vision Pro vs Galaxy XR: which is better?

On the published specs, Vision Pro costs the most ($3,699) and is the heaviest, Galaxy XR ($1,799.99) has the most pixels at 27 million, and Quest 3 ($599.99) is the only one of the three that includes controllers. Quest 3 suits games and budgets, Galaxy XR suits Android and Windows users, and Vision Pro suits people with iPhones and Macs.

What is the best mixed reality headset?

Mixed reality needs good passthrough cameras. Meta lists full-color passthrough at 4 megapixels for Quest 3 and Quest 3S, and Galaxy XR and Vision Pro also show your room through cameras. Steam Frame's passthrough is black and white unless you add Arcturus Vision's $150 color camera.

Do VR headsets need a PC or a console?

Quest, Steam Frame, Galaxy XR and Vision Pro run apps on the headset itself. PlayStation VR2 needs a PS5, or a PC with Sony's separate adapter. Steam Frame and Quest can also stream PC VR games if you own a gaming PC.

Is PlayStation VR2 still sold?

Sony's PS VR2 page says "Available now," and Sony set a recommended US price of $399.99 in March 2025. The Sony pages we read on Oct. 25 didn't show a current headset price, so check stock and price at a retailer.

Should I wait for Meta VR Glasses?

Only if you want a very light headset for movies, sports and work. Meta says they go on sale in spring 2027 for $1,299.99 without controllers, and they have a narrower field of view than Quest 3, according to UploadVR. If you want to play VR games now, Quest 3S or Quest 3 runs the same Quest library.
