Google said on May 19 that its first Android XR audio glasses would arrive "later this fall," and as of Oct. 25 none has gone on sale. A Samsung official told The Korea Herald they launch in November. The watch and developer announcements are further along. Wear OS 7 runs on Samsung's Galaxy Watch9 and Ultra2 and on Google's Pixel Watch 5, XREAL's Aura glasses have a price, and Android XR developer kits are open to applicants. The agent features Google showed for watches and glasses are still waiting.

This analysis is based on Google's I/O posts on blog.google and the Android Developers Blog, an IDC analysts' write-up and the company pages and Talaya guides linked in each section.

Android XR glasses

Shahram Izadi, the Google executive who runs Android XR, wrote that there will be two types of intelligent eyewear: audio glasses that give spoken help, and display glasses that show information in the lens. "Audio glasses are launching first, coming later this fall," he wrote. Google gave a sneak peek at two of the first designs, which will launch within Gentle Monster's and Warby Parker's fuller collections later this year. Samsung builds the hardware. A week earlier, Google's Android Show: I/O Edition had promised "a sneak peek at glasses, which will launch later this year."

Google listed seven features for the audio glasses. You ask Gemini about what you see, such as the reviews for a restaurant you're walking past or the meaning of a parking sign. The glasses give turn-by-turn directions, handle calls and texts, summarize missed messages and take photos that Google's Nano Banana model can edit, with "Hey Google, take a picture and put everyone in funny hats" as the example. They translate speech in a voice that matches the speaker's tone and pitch, and Gemini Intelligence "handles multi-step tasks in the background," such as preparing a DoorDash coffee order for your final confirmation. You can also use phone apps like Uber and Mondly by voice. Google said the glasses pair with both Android and iOS phones. Our Gemini on Android XR guide covers each feature.

IDC's devices analysts, writing on May 21, said the glasses presentation "confirmed shipping timelines and refined use cases, including automatic language translation and smartwatch integration," although prices weren't announced. They noted that Google is entering with an assistant "already in one's email, photos, search history, and calendar," and wrote: "In IDC's view, being late to a market with a structural advantage is not a bad place to be."

What has happened since

Samsung showed its pair at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22. The FCC certified Samsung smart glasses on Sept. 27, and a Samsung official told The Korea Herald on Oct. 1 that they will launch in November, according to our Samsung smart glasses guide. Samsung hasn't announced a price or a product name, and Warby Parker says its glasses are "coming this fall." One loose end is phone support. Google says the glasses pair with Android and iOS phones, while Samsung's footnotes require a compatible Galaxy AI phone, and neither company has explained the difference.

Display glasses have no date. Google's post names them as the second type and says nothing about timing. After the keynote, Android Authority wrote that Google was "strongly implying" none would reach stores "until sometime in 2027 at the earliest." The Elec reported in September that Samsung's first model with a color display could launch toward the end of 2027, according to 9to5Google, and Reuters reported in April that Kering plans Gucci-branded glasses with Google in 2027, The Verge wrote. Our release tracker lists each date and source.

Headsets and wired XR glasses

Google's glasses post describes Android XR as a platform for headsets, glasses and everything between, but none of the I/O posts we read announces a new headset. The only Android XR headset on sale is still Samsung's Galaxy XR, sold in the US and South Korea since October 2025 at $1,799.99 and in the UK since July at £1,699, as our Android XR device tracker records.

The wired-glasses hardware at I/O was XREAL's Aura, then still called Project Aura. IDC noted it appeared "with a redesigned compute puck and fingerprint sensor." XREAL demonstrated immersive Google Maps, 180- and 360-degree YouTube videos, a WebXR painting app built with Gemini and a laptop connected over DisplayPort, according to our XREAL Aura guide. The device was renamed XREAL Aura on June 16, when reservations opened. On Oct. 7 XREAL priced it at $1,279 for 12GB of memory and 256GB of storage or $1,499 for 16GB and 512GB, and said the launch was "just weeks away" in the US, Canada, Japan and South Korea. Only people who reserved before Oct. 7 can order now.

Gemini on wearables

IDC's analysts called the push of Gemini Intelligence "the common thread across it all" at the Android Show and I/O. For glasses, Google's post uses it for background multi-step tasks. For watches, the Wear OS 7 post says "select watches arriving later this year will come with Gemini Intelligence, providing proactive and personalized help."

Google's own watch is Pixel Watch 5, announced Aug. 12 and on shelves Aug. 20. Google calls it designed for Gemini Intelligence, with proactive suggestions such as surfacing a dinner time from your calendar and a double-pinch gesture to confirm them, according to our Pixel Watch guide. Samsung's Galaxy Watch9 and Ultra2 have Gemini built in with Raise to Talk, per our Galaxy Watch guide. Our Gemini on smartwatches guide covers requirements, setup and privacy settings.

Wear OS 7

The Android Developers Blog introduced Wear OS 7 on May 19. For watches upgrading from Wear OS 6, Google said users can expect up to 10% better battery life. New features for users include Live Updates, which surface real-time information from a watch or phone app, and a Remote Output Switcher that lets you change where audio plays from your wrist. For developers there are Wear Widgets, the successor to Tiles built on Jetpack Glance and RemoteCompose, Compose for Wear OS 1.6 and a Wear OS 7 Canary emulator based on Android 17.

Wear OS 7 has shipped on two watch lines. Samsung's Galaxy Watch9 and Ultra2, announced July 22 and on sale Aug. 7, run it, as does the Pixel Watch 5. Three promises have no firm dates in the pages we read. AppFunctions, which lets Gemini trigger actions inside apps by voice, such as "Start tracking my run" in Samsung Health, was in an early access program. Task automation, which would let you invoke and track automated app tasks from the watch, such as a DoorDash order, was "coming soon." The Wear Workout Tracker, a standard workout experience for exercise apps, was due in Wear OS "later in the year."

Developer tools

Google's 17-point developer recap covers phones, Googlebook laptops, cars and Google Play as well as wearables. These are the wearable items:

  • Developer Preview 4 of the Android XR SDK. Google said its core libraries, XR Runtime, Jetpack SceneCore and ARCore for Jetpack XR, are "moving to Beta soon."
  • The Android XR Developer Catalyst Program, where developers "can apply for XREAL's Project Aura, audio glasses, or display glasses developer kits."
  • An early preview of a Geospatial API in ARCore for Jetpack XR, for anchoring digital content to real-world locations.
  • Wear OS 7 tools: Wear Widgets, Live Updates, Compose for Wear OS 1.6 and the Canary emulator.
  • AppFunctions, which Google describes as letting apps act as "tools for use by agents and assistants." The Gemini integration was in private preview with trusted testers.

Our Android XR explainer summarizes the June 15 Android Developers Blog follow-up on the SDK, including Jetpack Projected, which extends an existing phone app to audio and display glasses, and Jetpack Compose Glimmer, a set of interface components for see-through displays. The pages we read give no date for the move to Beta.
