Apple Watch Series 12 vs Ultra 4: size, battery, durability and which to buy
Most people should buy the Series 12. The Ultra 4 is worth it if you swim deep, run long, hike far from cell service or want satellite Emergency SOS. Here is how they compare on Apple's own specifications.

Part of our Apple Watch guide
For most people the better buy is the Apple Watch Series 12. It has the same chip and the same health sensors as the Apple Watch Ultra 4, and it is far lighter. The Ultra 4 is worth it for a short list of reasons: deeper water, longer battery, dual-frequency GPS and satellite Emergency SOS.
Apple announced both watches on Sept. 9, 2026, and both went on sale Friday, Sept. 18, according to Apple's newsroom posts for the Series 12 and the Ultra 4. This guide is based on Apple's published specifications and announcements. Talaya has not tested either watch, so battery and durability figures below are Apple's ratings from its own tests.

Which one should you buy?
Buy the Series 12 if you want a watch for daily wear, gym workouts, running, cycling and sleep tracking, and you want it to be light on your wrist. Its health hardware matches the Ultra's, and the 24-hour rating covers a normal day and night with a quick top-up.
Buy the Ultra 4 if any of these describe you:
- You swim, snorkel or dive. The Ultra 4 is rated to 100 meters and supports recreational diving to 40 meters.
- You run long races, hike or spend days away from a charger. Its battery is rated for up to 50 hours of normal use, and up to 45 hours of tracking in Max Extended Workout mode.
- You go places without cell coverage and want Emergency SOS and Messages by satellite.
- You want the bigger, brighter display (3,000 nits at peak).

Models and trade-in
The Apple pages we read for this guide did not show US prices, so check the current price of your configuration on Apple's store before you buy. Apple sells a GPS + Cellular model, which it says "allows you to stay connected to the people and information you care about with just your Apple Watch."
Apple's shop page also lists a trade-in offer on the Series 12 of $30 to $430 off when you trade in an Apple Watch. We did not read an Ultra 4 trade-in offer.

Size and comfort
The Ultra 4 is a noticeably larger object. Apple lists it at 49 mm by 44 mm and 12 mm deep, and 63.0 grams in natural titanium. The 46 mm Series 12 is 46 mm by 40 mm and weighs 39.5 grams in aluminum or 44.9 grams in titanium. The Series 12 also comes in a 42 mm size, and a ceramic version measures 47 mm by 41 mm.
Apple says the Ultra 4 fits wrists from 130 to 210 mm and the 46 mm Series 12 fits 140 to 245 mm, so the Series 12 reaches larger wrists. If you wear a watch to bed for sleep tracking, the weight difference is the part you will feel most.
Battery
This is the Ultra's clearest advantage. On everyday use Apple rates the Ultra 4 for up to 50 hours and the Series 12 for up to 24. In Low Power Mode the figures are up to 84 hours and up to 38 hours.
For workouts, Apple says the Series 12 lasts up to 10 hours during an outdoor workout, which it calls 25% more than the previous model. The Ultra 4 is rated for up to 18 hours of workout tracking, up to 25 hours in Extended Workout mode and up to 45 hours in Max Extended Workout mode. That 45-hour figure applies only to Max Extended Workout tracking, not everyday battery.
Charging is quicker on the Ultra too: 15 minutes gives up to 18 hours of normal use, against up to 12 hours on the Series 12.
Durability and water
Both watches carry a water resistance rating under ISO standard 22810:2010. The Series 12 is rated to 50 meters and Apple calls it swimproof. The Ultra 4 is rated to 100 meters for swimming, snorkeling, scuba and high-speed water sports, and it has a recreational dive mode to 40 meters. The Series 12 offers a depth gauge to 6 meters.
For toughness, Apple says the Ultra 4 is tested to MIL-STD 810H against subsections that include altitude, high and low temperature, temperature shock, immersion, freeze with thaw, ice and freezing rain, and shock and vibration. The Series 12 spec page we read has no MIL-STD line, so we can't say whether it is rated for the standard.
Glass differs by case. Aluminum Series 12 models use Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60% tougher than the Ion-X glass on previous aluminum models. Titanium and ceramic Series 12 models and the Ultra 4 use sapphire. The Ultra 4 case is grade 5 titanium only, while the Series 12 can be aluminum, titanium or ceramic.
Features only on the Ultra 4
- Satellite communications. Apple's Ultra 4 spec page lists Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My by satellite. The Series 12 page we read does not list a satellite feature.
- Dual-frequency GPS. The Ultra 4 uses precision dual-frequency GPS, and Apple says it has "the most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch." That is Apple's claim, not an independent measurement. The Series 12 uses precision L1 GPS.
- Action button. The Ultra 4 spec page lists a customizable Action button, and its product page leans on it for runners, along with Pacer, Race Route and Automatic Track Detection. We did not confirm whether the Series 12 offers these, so check Apple's comparison tool before you buy if one of them is a deciding factor.
- Brighter display. 3,000 nits against 2,000.
- Ultra bands and Hermès. Apple introduced new Ocean, Trail and Alpine loops for the Ultra 4, plus a Hermès Ultra 4 in natural titanium.
What both watches share
Health tracking is not the dividing line. Apple lists the same Health Sensing System on both: a second-generation electrical heart sensor, an always-on optical heart sensor, a blood oxygen sensor and a temperature sensor. Both measure heart rate every five seconds and HRV up to 24 times more often than before, and both get the 0-to-10 daily Readiness score with its four recommendations (Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It).
Both also get Audio Intelligence, with Sound Recognition, Live Rewind, Siri Recap and Shazam. Apple says Siri Recap and Live Rewind arrive in beta later in 2026. Siri AI on watchOS 27 is rolling out in English. For more on the software, read our watchOS 27 Siri and Audio Intelligence explainer and our piece on hypertension notifications.
What we could not confirm
Apple's pages we read did not show a few things: whether the Series 12 has the Action button, the Siren, Automatic Track Detection, Race Route or Pacer; whether it is rated for MIL-STD 810H; the current US price of either model; and AppleCare+ prices. We have left them out of the comparison rather than guess.
